What are the key metaphysical concepts discussed in the Gheranda Samhita?
Within the sevenfold yoga path, the text rests on a vision of the human being as more than a physical organism. It presupposes an immortal, witnessing Self (jīvātman) distinct from the body and mind, journeying toward union with a higher reality (paramātman). The body is treated as a microcosm of the universe, a carefully structured “field” in which cosmic principles are reflected. Hence the emphasis on purification and strengthening of the body: it becomes a temple and a precise instrument for spiritual realization rather than an obstacle to it.
A detailed subtle anatomy undergirds this vision. The work speaks of nāḍīs (with iḍā, piṅgalā, and suṣumṇā as primary channels), cakras as energy centers along the spine, and prāṇa as the vital force flowing through this network in distinct functions or “winds.” Through practices such as prāṇāyāma, mudrā, and other limbs of the path, prāṇa is gradually regulated and led into suṣumṇā. The awakening and ascent of kuṇḍalinī śakti through these centers symbolizes the refinement of consciousness from gross to subtle and ultimately to a liberating insight.
This metaphysical framework is inseparable from a graded understanding of consciousness and liberation. The text assumes that ordinary awareness is clouded by various impurities and conditioned by underlying qualities (guṇas), and that systematic yogic discipline can cleanse and balance these tendencies. As distraction gives way to concentration, then meditation, and finally samādhi, the duality of knower and known is said to fall away. Liberation is portrayed not as the destruction of the Self but as freedom from ignorance, suffering, and the binding force of karma, realized through direct, non-dual awareness.
Throughout, the relationship between the individual and the cosmos is mirrored in the relationship between practitioner and guide. The guru–śiṣya principle is treated as more than a pedagogical convenience; it is a living conduit through which insight and transformative power are transmitted. In this way, the metaphysical ideas of Self, subtle body, and liberation are not left as abstractions, but are woven into a concrete path where body, breath, and mind are progressively aligned with the deepest nature of reality.
