What are the four regulative principles observed by ISKCON members?

Within the practice of Krishna consciousness, four regulative principles serve as foundational disciplines that shape the devotee’s daily life and inner orientation. The first is the commitment to abstain from meat, fish, and eggs, embracing a form of vegetarianism that is meant to cultivate compassion and purity. By restricting the diet in this way, practitioners seek to align bodily sustenance with a consciousness that honors all living beings. This discipline is not merely dietary but is understood as a spiritual aid, supporting a more sattvic, or harmonious, state of mind.

A second principle is the renunciation of all forms of intoxication, including alcohol, drugs, and tobacco. This restraint is intended to preserve clarity of consciousness, so that the mind remains a fit instrument for meditation, prayer, and scriptural study. By avoiding substances that cloud awareness, practitioners aim to reduce tendencies toward heedlessness and distraction. The emphasis here is on maintaining a steady, lucid state that can more readily perceive and remember the presence of the divine.

The third regulative principle is the avoidance of illicit sex, which is understood as sexual activity outside of marriage, and within marriage, restricted to the purpose of procreation. This guideline seeks to transform what is often a powerful, destabilizing force into a regulated, sanctified aspect of life. By channeling sexual energy within a committed, dharmic framework, practitioners endeavor to lessen attachment and agitation, thereby freeing more attention and devotion for spiritual pursuits. The discipline is not framed as a rejection of family life, but as a way to harmonize it with the quest for transcendence.

The fourth principle is the rejection of all forms of gambling and speculative games of chance. Such activities are seen as feeding greed, restlessness, and the illusion of quick gain without genuine effort. By stepping away from gambling, devotees attempt to cultivate steadiness, honesty, and responsibility in their material dealings. This restraint supports a life in which one’s livelihood and recreation are aligned with spiritual integrity, rather than with the fluctuations of fortune and risk.
