What is the meaning of “Original Mind” in Bankei Yotaku’s teachings?
In Bankei Yōtaku’s teaching, “Original Mind” designates the mind in its natural, uncontrived state, prior to the stirrings of attachment, discrimination, or delusion. It is described as unborn and undying: it does not come into being when conditions are favorable, nor does it vanish when confusion or turmoil appears. Thoughts, emotions, and perceptions arise and pass away within this field, yet the Original Mind itself is not produced or destroyed by them. This mind is said to be inherently pure and luminous, with error and suffering understood as temporary obscurations rather than permanent stains. Ignorance, in this light, is a misunderstanding of one’s own present, functioning awareness rather than a flaw in awareness itself.
This Original Mind is also portrayed as always fully present and already complete in every person, not as a distant goal that must be laboriously constructed. Bankei emphasizes that enlightenment is not the acquisition of something new, but the recognition and abiding in this ever-present, unborn mind. When one does not follow after discriminating thoughts, one is already living in accord with the Buddha Way. From this standpoint, practice becomes less a matter of accumulating virtues or insights and more a matter of not departing from what is already operative here and now.
A further aspect of Bankei’s presentation is the non-dual and effortless character of Original Mind. Existing prior to the dualistic divisions of self and other, good and bad, or enlightenment and delusion, it is an unconditioned awareness that remains unchanged by whatever arises within it. When one abides as this Original Mind, actions naturally become appropriate and compassionate without contrived moral calculation or forced discipline. The mind functions spontaneously—seeing, hearing, and responding—without needing to fabricate a special state. To recognize this is to see that the path is not a climb toward some remote peak, but a turning back to the unborn, originally pure awareness that has never been absent.
