Tripura Rahasya presents ultimate reality as Tripura, the supreme, non-dual consciousness that is both the impersonal absolute and the personal Goddess. This reality is pure awareness (cit), self-luminous and self-aware, not dependent on anything else for its illumination. It is beyond all attributes and limitations, transcending subject–object duality and the usual perceiver–perceived relationship. Though beyond form, quality, time, and space, it is also immanent, present as the very substratum upon which the entire universe appears. Śiva as pure being-consciousness and Śakti as dynamic power are not two; they are a single essence, and Tripura is this unity of awareness and its power to manifest.

The name Tripura itself indicates how this one reality appears in a threefold manner. It is the ground of the experiencer, the experienced world, and the process of experience, and is also described through the symbolism of the three states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. Ultimate reality is the “fourth,” the witnessing consciousness that underlies and transcends all these states while remaining unchanged. In this vision, the universe is neither absolutely real in itself nor utterly unreal; it is consciousness appearing as multiplicity, like waves on water or images in a mirror. Māyā is the power of this consciousness to appear as the phenomenal world, and ignorance makes this appearance seem external, independent, and divided.

From this standpoint, the individual self and the supreme self are fundamentally identical. What is ordinarily taken to be the limited jīva is, in truth, that same self-luminous awareness in which subject, object, and their relation arise. Liberation is not the acquisition of something new but the clear recognition that one’s essential nature is already this Tripura, the non-dual consciousness that pervades and transcends all experience. Devotion to Tripura and knowledge of Tripura ultimately converge, because the Goddess who is worshiped and the consciousness that knows are realized to be one and the same reality.
