Marpa Lotsawa is remembered above all as a pivotal translator who journeyed repeatedly from Tibet to India in order to study with great Indian masters, especially Naropa. Through these arduous travels he acquired a vast range of Vajrayāna, Mahāmudrā, and tantric teachings, which he then rendered from Sanskrit into Tibetan. These translations did not merely add to an existing library; they became a crucial part of the Tibetan Buddhist canon and formed the doctrinal backbone of what would become the Kagyu tradition. In this way, Marpa stands as a vital link in the “second transmission” of Buddhism from India to Tibet, ensuring that sophisticated contemplative systems and ritual practices were preserved in a new cultural setting.

As a teacher, Marpa is best known as the root guru of Milarepa, who later came to be revered as Tibet’s most celebrated yogi and poet. The relationship between Marpa and Milarepa is often portrayed as demanding and even harsh, yet it is precisely this rigorous training that is said to have purified Milarepa’s past and opened the way to his realization. Through such uncompromising methods, Marpa transmitted profound tantric instructions, including the Mahāmudrā teachings and the Six Yogas of Naropa, along with other advanced practices. His role as Milarepa’s guru thus became emblematic of the transformative power of the teacher–disciple bond within the Kagyu lineage.

Marpa’s activity as both translator and master gave rise to what came to be known as the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, one of the four major Tibetan traditions. By transmitting the Indian Mahāsiddha heritage into Tibetan soil, he effectively established a living lineage that combined textual fidelity with experiential practice. The teachings he brought—ranging from Mahāmudrā to key tantric systems—were not preserved as mere scholarly artifacts but as a dynamic oral and practical tradition. For this reason, Marpa is revered not only as a scholar-translator but also as a realized practitioner whose legacy continues through the lineage he founded and the accomplished disciples he trained.
