Within Eckankar, reincarnation is understood as a fundamental spiritual law that shapes the long journey of Soul. Soul is regarded as an eternal spark of God that takes on many different bodies and lives in order to gain experience, unfold its inherent spiritual abilities, and gradually awaken to its divine nature. These incarnations are not confined to a single world or plane; rather, they may occur across various realms of existence, each offering distinct opportunities for growth. The entire process is oriented toward the eventual attainment of spiritual freedom, often described as Self-Realization and God-Realization, at which point the cycle of rebirth no longer holds sway.

Past lives are seen as deeply relevant to present circumstances. Experiences from previous incarnations give rise to karmic patterns that can shape current relationships, fears, talents, and life situations. Karma, in this view, is not so much a system of punishment as a teaching mechanism through which Soul balances past actions and learns needed lessons. Difficult or painful experiences are understood as opportunities that Soul has, at some level, accepted for the sake of spiritual development. Unresolved issues from earlier lives must be addressed in this or future incarnations, and soul groups may return together in different roles to work out mutual karma and deepen their shared learning.

Through spiritual exercises such as contemplation, the chanting of sacred sound, dream study, and practices associated with Soul Travel, individuals may gain direct glimpses of previous incarnations when this serves genuine spiritual growth. Such revelations are valued not for curiosity’s sake, but for their capacity to help resolve inner blocks, release fears and attachments, and clarify the soul’s present responsibilities. Over time, this understanding supports the movement toward becoming a conscious co-worker with the Divine and, ultimately, transcending the need for further reincarnation.
