How does Eckankar define God, soul, and the afterlife?
In Eckankar, God is spoken of as Sugmad, the infinite and formless divine source that lies beyond human comprehension. Sugmad is not conceived as an anthropomorphic, personal deity, but as the absolute, impersonal-yet-loving reality from which all existence proceeds. This ultimate reality is pure consciousness and love, and its primary expression in creation is through the divine currents of Light and Sound, often called the ECK or Holy Spirit. From this perspective, God is both utterly transcendent—beyond form, thought, and attributes—and intimately present as the living current that sustains all worlds and beings.
The understanding of the individual is framed in terms of Soul, regarded as an eternal, individualized spark or unit of pure divine essence created by Sugmad. Soul is distinct from the body, emotions, and mind, and is inherently indestructible and free. It is described as a fragment of God sent into the lower worlds for spiritual experience, growth, and unfoldment across many lifetimes and planes of existence. As spiritual maturity deepens, Soul may come to function as a conscious co-worker with God, acting in harmony with the divine will and recognizing its own innate divinity. Practices such as Soul Travel and contemplation on sacred names of God are understood as ways for Soul to experience higher realms even while still in the physical body.
The afterlife, in this teaching, is not a static heaven or hell but a dynamic, ongoing journey of spiritual evolution. After physical death, Soul continues in subtler bodies and moves to the plane that corresponds to its spiritual development, consciousness, and karmic condition. These planes include the physical, astral, causal, mental, and etheric worlds, as well as higher spiritual realms often called the Soul Plane and beyond. Each level is characterized by differing degrees of Light, Sound, and spiritual refinement, serving as classrooms for continued learning. Reincarnation is affirmed as part of this process: Soul returns to the physical plane as needed to balance karma, gain further experience, and advance toward spiritual liberation. The ultimate aim is conscious union with Sugmad beyond all planes, where the cycle of rebirth is transcended and Soul realizes its true home in the divine.
