What does Eckankar teach about soul travel?

Eckankar presents soul travel as the natural movement of Soul—the true self—beyond the physical body into higher planes of existence, while full consciousness is maintained. This is not regarded as fantasy or mere visualization, but as a direct, experiential way of knowing spiritual realities. The journey is described as unfolding through inner contact with the Light and Sound of God, known as the ECK, which serves as both the medium and the proof of the experience. In this view, soul travel is a central means by which one passes beyond belief into firsthand spiritual knowledge.

The tradition teaches that Soul can explore a series of inner worlds or planes, such as the astral, causal, mental, etheric, and Soul planes, each offering distinct lessons and perspectives. These realms are approached through spiritual exercises that emphasize contemplation rather than rigid meditation techniques. Common practices include focusing on sacred words—especially the HU—as well as attuning to inner light and inner sound. Dreams, vivid inner experiences, and subtle perceptions of light or sound are often regarded as early or partial forms of soul travel, which may deepen over time into more conscious journeys.

Guidance plays a crucial role in this path. The Mahanta, the Living ECK Master, is understood as an inner spiritual guide who accompanies and protects the seeker during such journeys, helping to interpret experiences and keep them oriented toward spiritual growth. Through this relationship, soul travel becomes not only an exploration of inner worlds but also a disciplined path of transformation, aimed at self-realization and ultimately God-realization. The experiences are often described as more vivid and real than ordinary waking life, with the Soul retaining clear awareness and memory of what has been learned.

Within this framework, the purpose of soul travel is multifaceted: to gain spiritual insight and wisdom, to discover one’s identity as Soul independent of the physical body, and to move toward spiritual liberation. By repeatedly entering these higher states of awareness, the seeker is said to overcome fear of death, accelerate spiritual growth, and cultivate a conscious relationship with the divine through the ECK. Thus, soul travel is portrayed not as an escape from life, but as a disciplined, experiential path that reorients one’s entire understanding of existence.
