About Getting Back Home
Within Nichiren Buddhism, the heart of the practice lies in chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the title and essence of the Lotus Sutra, rather than in mastering the entire text intellectually. The transformative power is understood to be accessed directly through this daimoku, so benefit does not depend on having read or fully comprehended every chapter. Faith, sincerity, and consistency in chanting are regarded as more crucial than scholarly understanding. In this way, the practice is meant to be accessible to all, regardless of education, literacy, or philosophical training.
At the same time, many practitioners find that study naturally becomes a supportive element as their practice matures. Engaging with portions of the Lotus Sutra and with Nichiren’s writings can deepen appreciation of what is being chanted and strengthen confidence in the path, but such study is seen as supplementary rather than a prerequisite. Understanding is viewed as something that unfolds gradually, shaped by ongoing chanting and the experiences of daily life. The essential point is that the Buddha nature inherent in all beings can be awakened through sincere chanting of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, independent of one’s level of doctrinal knowledge.
