Are there any prerequisites to join the Brahma Kumaris?

Participation in the Brahma Kumaris is presented as open and inclusive, without formal prerequisites related to age, education, caste, religion, or prior spiritual background. There is no requirement to convert from one’s existing faith, nor are there compulsory fees or financial obligations for basic participation. The usual entry point is to attend free introductory classes, often structured as a short foundational course in Raja Yoga and the core teachings. These sessions function less as a test and more as an orientation, allowing a seeker to explore the teachings in a structured manner. In this sense, “joining” is not marked by a single ritual moment, but by a gradual deepening of understanding and practice.

What is gently but clearly expected is an authentic interest in spiritual development and a willingness to engage with the central ideas of soul consciousness, God, and inner transformation. Regular attendance at classes and meditation sessions is encouraged as a way of stabilizing this inner journey. Over time, many students choose to adopt a pure, vegetarian lifestyle and to align their daily habits with the ethos of spiritual purity that the Brahma Kumaris emphasize. For those who wish to move into deeper involvement, there is also an expectation of celibacy (brahmacharya), understood as part of a disciplined, purity-oriented way of life. Throughout, the individual is invited to decide the level of commitment that feels appropriate, allowing participation to unfold as a gradual, self-chosen path rather than a rigidly imposed requirement.
