What was Gampopa’s relationship with his teacher, Milarepa?
Gampopa, also known as Dagpo Lhaje, stood in the role of Milarepa’s foremost disciple and dharma heir, the one regarded as his “heart son” and primary lineage holder. Their connection exemplifies the classic Tibetan Buddhist ideal of the teacher–disciple bond, in which a realized master entrusts the entirety of a living spiritual tradition to a single, fully ripened student. Milarepa recognized in Gampopa the destined inheritor of his realization and transmission, and thus entrusted him with the complete Kagyu teachings, including the Mahamudra instructions and the Six Yogas of Naropa. In this way, Gampopa became the main inheritor and transmitter of Milarepa’s spiritual legacy.
The relationship did not arise casually; it was marked by testing, purification, and deep training. Coming from a background as a Kadampa monk and physician, Gampopa brought a strong foundation in monastic discipline and structured doctrine. Milarepa, embodying the yogic and experiential side of the path, rigorously tested Gampopa’s dedication and purified his karma through various trials before fully accepting him. Once accepted, Gampopa received both theoretical instruction and practical meditation guidance over several years, undergoing an intensive training that fused his earlier Kadampa formation with Milarepa’s experiential realization.
This meeting of lineages and temperaments shaped the future of the Kagyu school. Milarepa explicitly entrusted Gampopa with the Kagyu lineage and predicted that he would spread the teachings widely. Drawing on Milarepa’s transmissions, Gampopa systematized and organized the teachings, blending the yogic, experiential tradition with monastic structure and a staged presentation of the path. From this synthesis emerged the Dagpo Kagyu tradition, which became the foundation for the later flourishing of the Kagyu schools, all rooted in the intimate and profound teacher–disciple relationship between Milarepa and Gampopa.
