Are there any prerequisites for practicing Sant Mat meditation?
Within Sant Mat, the inner Light and Sound practice is understood less as a casual technique and more as a comprehensive spiritual path, and for that reason certain prerequisites are emphasized. Central among these is an ethical way of life: truthfulness, non‑violence, and purity in conduct, including sexual fidelity for those who are married and celibacy for those who are unmarried. A strict vegetarian or lacto‑vegetarian diet is generally required, excluding meat, fish, and eggs, and often accompanied by abstinence from alcohol, intoxicants, and other mind‑altering substances. These disciplines are viewed as creating the inner and outer conditions in which subtler spiritual experiences can unfold more safely and steadily.
Another key prerequisite is a sincere orientation toward the goal of realizing the inner Light and Sound, rather than mere curiosity. This is expressed through willingness to accept the guidance of a living Master (Satguru) and to receive formal initiation (diksha) from such a teacher. The initiation is regarded as the point at which the specific meditation method is imparted, along with the establishment of a personal guru‑disciple relationship. Because the instructions are considered sacred and subtle, they are usually given privately rather than through books or public discourse.
Commitment is also central: aspirants are generally expected to promise a substantial daily meditation practice, often around two and a half hours, and to maintain remembrance of the divine Name throughout daily life. Many lineages encourage or require a period of ethical living and study of Sant Mat teachings before initiation, so that the seeker can demonstrate readiness and genuine spiritual longing. Regular participation in satsang, or spiritual gatherings, is often recommended as a way to deepen understanding and sustain motivation. Practical considerations—such as having sufficient time, a conducive environment for meditation, and adequate mental and physical stability—are likewise treated as part of the preparatory ground for this path.
