What is the significance of “One Vehicle” in Tiantai teachings?

Within Tiantai thought, the doctrine of the “One Vehicle” (ekayāna, yīchéng) is the key by which the Lotus Sutra is read as the Buddha’s final and complete revelation. The various paths traditionally spoken of—the vehicles of the śrāvaka, pratyekabuddha, and bodhisattva—are reinterpreted as provisional skillful means, adapted to the differing capacities of beings. These diverse teachings are not denied or disparaged; rather, they are gathered up and re-situated as partial, temporary expressions of a single, comprehensive Buddha Vehicle. The One Vehicle thus functions as a hermeneutical principle that allows Tiantai to classify and harmonize the full range of Buddhist doctrines without rejecting any of them.

At the heart of this teaching lies the affirmation that there is only one ultimate goal and one final destiny for all beings: complete Buddhahood. The distinctions between “lesser” and “greater” paths are, from this perspective, apparent rather than ultimate, since all beings are ultimately led toward the same perfect enlightenment. This implies that every sentient being already bears the full potential for awakening, a potential that Tiantai links with its broader vision of the non-duality of the phenomenal world and ultimate reality. Ordinary beings, bodhisattvas, and Buddhas are thus understood to share the same essential nature, differing only in the degree to which this nature is realized.

Within Tiantai’s doctrinal system, the One Vehicle is identified with the “perfect teaching” (yuánjiào), the level of teaching that fully encompasses and harmonizes all others. It is on this basis that Tiantai develops its distinctive vision of universal enlightenment potential, expressed in doctrines such as “three thousand realms in a single thought-moment.” These ideas underscore that the path is not merely a distant ascent toward Buddhahood but also a recognition of the profundity already present in each moment of mind. In this way, the One Vehicle serves both as a unifying doctrinal framework and as an invitation to see all teachings, and indeed all experiences, as expressions of a single, all-inclusive Buddha path.
