What are the main sacred texts in the Bahá’í Faith?

Within the Bahá’í Faith, the notion of sacred text is centered above all on the revealed writings of Bahá’u’lláh, the Prophet-Founder, and the Báb, His forerunner. Bahá’u’lláh’s works are regarded as the most authoritative, with the Kitáb-i-Aqdas, or Most Holy Book, standing as the central book of laws and ordinances that shapes personal, social, and community life. Alongside it, the Kitáb-i-Íqán, or Book of Certitude, lays out key theological principles and offers an interpretive key to earlier scriptures. Texts such as the Hidden Words, the Seven Valleys and Four Valleys, and various Tablets and letters deepen the mystical, ethical, and practical dimensions of this revelation, forming a rich tapestry of guidance for spiritual seekers.

The writings of the Báb are also revered as sacred, preparing the way for Bahá’u’lláh and announcing His advent. Among these, the Persian and Arabic Bayán hold a special place, presenting spiritual teachings and laws in a form that anticipates their fulfillment in the dispensation of Bahá’u’lláh. Works such as the Qayyúmu’l-Asmá’, a commentary on the Qur’anic story of Joseph, further illuminate the Báb’s role as herald and forerunner, offering a powerful devotional and theological text that Bahá’ís treat with great reverence.

A further layer of authoritative writing is found in the works of ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá, Bahá’u’lláh’s eldest son and appointed interpreter. While not “revelation” in the same sense as the writings of Bahá’u’lláh and the Báb, these texts are nonetheless central for understanding and applying the teachings. Some Answered Questions, for example, presents theological discussions and explanations that clarify complex doctrines, while other tablets and treatises, such as the Tablets of the Divine Plan and The Secret of Divine Civilization, explore themes of spiritual growth, social progress, and the global mission of the Faith. Together, these bodies of writing form a coherent scriptural universe in which law, mysticism, theology, and social vision are interwoven, inviting the reader into an ever-deepening engagement with the ideal of unity.
