How did Anandamayi Ma’s followers view her?

Devotees of Anandamayi Ma generally regarded her not as a conventional religious teacher, but as a direct manifestation of the Divine Mother. She was approached as “Ma,” the universal and cosmic mother, often understood as a living goddess or avatar, a descent of the Divine into human form. Many followers believed that she was never truly bound by ordinary human limitations and that her constant joy and serenity were visible signs of this divinity. Her very presence, especially in darshan and satsang, was experienced as spiritually transformative, drawing seekers toward self-realization and liberation.

Followers also held that Anandamayi Ma was established from birth in an unbroken state of God-consciousness. She was seen as a jivanmukta, a perfectly God-realized being abiding in sahaja samadhi, a natural and spontaneous absorption in the Divine. In this view, she did not attain realization through formal spiritual practices or under the guidance of a guru, but rather manifested as already complete, free of ego and personal desire. Her life was thus interpreted as an uninterrupted revelation of the highest spiritual state.

As a spiritual guide, Anandamayi Ma was revered as an infallible and compassionate master who could respond to the inner needs of each seeker. Devotees experienced her as a universal, non-sectarian teacher who honored all authentic paths and was not confined to any single doctrine, scripture, or ritual system. People from diverse religious backgrounds—Hindu, Muslim, Christian, and others—felt that she transcended sectarian boundaries while embodying the essence of Sanatana Dharma in an inclusive manner. For many, she functioned not only as an external guru but also as an inner, guiding presence, an embodiment of pure consciousness, love, and bliss that continued to shape their lives beyond physical encounters.

Accounts from followers frequently attribute miraculous qualities to her, such as omniscience, healing abilities, and prophetic insight. These reported phenomena were not merely regarded as wonders in themselves, but as further confirmation of her divine status and her role as a special descent of the Divine for the spiritual upliftment of beings. In the eyes of her devotees, Anandamayi Ma thus stood as the Divine Mother in human form: ever-blissful, ever-compassionate, and uniquely capable of awakening the latent spirituality in those who came to her.
