Hua Yan thought portrays reality as a single, seamless field in which all things mutually interpenetrate and support one another. Every phenomenon is said to both contain and be contained by every other, so that nothing stands alone or possesses an independent essence. This vision is often expressed through the image of an infinite net of jewels, where each jewel reflects all the others without obstruction. In such a universe, each particular event or being is not a self-enclosed unit, but a dynamic node in an all-encompassing web of relations.

Within this framework, the realm of ultimate principle and the realm of concrete phenomena are not two separate domains. Universal principle and particular things are understood as completely interwoven, so that the absolute is fully present in the relative, and the relative is never apart from the absolute. The totality of reality, sometimes spoken of as the universal realm, is thus not a distant abstraction but the very texture of ordinary experience. To see any one thing clearly is, in this sense, to glimpse the presence of the whole.

Hua Yan philosophy also emphasizes that this interpenetration is without obstruction: distinct things do not cancel each other out, but coexist in a state of harmonious inclusion. Each phenomenon maintains its unique character while simultaneously expressing the entirety of the cosmos. This gives rise to an image of the world as an infinite web of mutual causation and influence, where every action reverberates throughout the whole. The unity described here is therefore not a featureless oneness, but a richly differentiated harmony in which all beings are intrinsically linked and inseparable.
