What is the purpose of meditation according to Shivabalayogi?

In Shivabalayogi’s teaching, meditation is directed toward Self-realization, the direct recognition of one’s true nature as the eternal Self, which is not separate from the Divine or Supreme Reality. The restless, thought-driven mind is regarded as the primary veil that obscures this truth. Through sustained practice of dhyana, attention is gradually withdrawn from external objects and mental modifications until the mind becomes completely still. In that stillness, the meditator encounters the Self directly, beyond concepts, images, and sensory impressions. This realization is not merely intellectual; it is an immediate experience of oneness with the universal consciousness.

Meditation, in this view, also serves as a profound purification of the mind. By dissolving mental impressions, desires, and the ego-sense that creates separation, meditation removes the inner causes of bondage and suffering. As these impurities are cleared, the illusory nature of the world as an independent reality becomes evident, and the unity of the individual Self with the Supreme Self is recognized. This inner transformation naturally gives rise to peace, devotion, and moral strength, as conduct begins to flow from clarity rather than from compulsion or fear.

Shivabalayogi further presents meditation as the means to liberation, or moksha, release from the cycle of birth and death. When the ego-mind that clings to individuality is dissolved in the silence of deep meditation, the apparent separation between meditator, act of meditation, and object of meditation falls away. What remains is pure consciousness, abiding in its own nature. From this realization arises a lasting peace and bliss that does not depend on external circumstances, a happiness that is stable amid the changing conditions of life. In this way, meditation fulfills its purpose: the stilling of the mind, the realization of the Self as one with God, and the attainment of unshakable inner peace.
