H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, known as Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje (1904–1987), stands as one of the foremost Tibetan Buddhist masters of the Nyingma school in the twentieth century. Recognized as the reincarnation of the great tertön Dudjom Lingpa, he embodied a living continuity of that earlier master’s visionary legacy. Within the Nyingma tradition he was regarded as a supreme head of the school, especially in the period following the Tibetan diaspora, and his presence offered a unifying point of reference for many practitioners and teachers. His life can be seen as a bridge between old Tibet and the emerging global landscape of Dharma practice, holding together fidelity to lineage with responsiveness to new circumstances.

As a tertön, Dudjom Rinpoche revealed and systematized numerous terma, or hidden teachings, which became known collectively as the Dudjom Tersar, the “New Treasures of Dudjom.” These revelations were not merely textual discoveries but living practice cycles that shaped the contemplative lives of many disciples. He was also a major holder of the Dzogchen tradition, revered as a fully accomplished master of its highest teachings. His writings, including a comprehensive history and exposition of the Nyingma school, have become standard references for understanding both the doctrinal foundations and historical development of this ancient lineage. Through these works, scholarship and realization met in a single, integrated expression.

Dudjom Rinpoche’s activity after leaving Tibet illustrates the depth of his commitment to the continuity of the Nyingma teachings. In exile he helped preserve and reestablish the tradition by founding monasteries, retreat centers, and lay communities in places such as India, Nepal, Bhutan, and various countries in the West. These institutions became vessels through which the full range of Nyingma transmissions, especially his own Dudjom Tersar, could be practiced and sustained. Many influential lamas of the current generation received transmissions from him, so that his influence now flows through numerous lineages and communities. His life and work thus exemplify how a realized master can serve simultaneously as scholar, visionary, and guardian of an entire spiritual tradition.
