The term “Buddha” is not a personal name but a title that arises from the Sanskrit root *budh*, meaning “to awaken” or “to know.” It designates “the Awakened One” or “the Enlightened One,” one who has fully awakened to the true nature of reality and is free from ignorance, craving, and suffering. In this sense, “Buddha” points to a state of complete spiritual clarity and liberation rather than to a particular social role or worldly achievement. The title thus signifies a radical transformation of understanding, a total awakening from the ordinary, deluded way of seeing existence.

Gautama, born Siddhartha of the Śākya or Shakya clan, came to bear this title through a long and demanding spiritual quest. After encountering the realities of old age, sickness, and death, he renounced his privileged life and undertook years of rigorous practice, including severe asceticism and disciplined meditation. Finding that extreme austerity did not lead to true insight, he turned to a balanced approach sometimes described as a “Middle Way” between indulgence and self-mortification. Seated in deep meditation under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, he attained a profound awakening that brought complete liberation from suffering and the mental defilements that sustain it.

This awakening is described as encompassing a penetrating understanding of the nature of existence, including the workings of karma and rebirth, the impermanence of all conditioned phenomena, the reality and cessation of suffering, and the path that leads to that cessation. Through this realization, he fully comprehended what later came to be articulated as the Four Noble Truths and the dependent arising of all things. With ignorance and craving uprooted, he attained nirvāṇa while still alive, a state of perfect freedom and clarity. From that point onward, he was known as the Buddha, the Awakened One, and devoted the remainder of his life to guiding others toward the same awakening.
