How does Sant Mat view the concept of God?
In Sant Mat, God is regarded as the one supreme, formless, and ineffable Reality that stands beyond the reach of ordinary thought and sense perception. This Reality is often designated by names such as Sat Purush, Anami Purush, Radhasoami, or Ekankar, yet is ultimately beyond all names and conceptual categories. God is both the transcendent source of all that exists and the eternal, unchanging ground of being, associated with the highest spiritual region, sometimes described as Sach Khand or the True Realm. Although beyond full intellectual comprehension, this Supreme Being is not distant in an existential sense, for the soul is understood to be of the same essential nature, like a drop of the same ocean.
A distinctive feature of Sant Mat is its emphasis on God as Light and Sound, expressed as Shabd or Naam, the Divine Sound Current or Word. This Shabd is described as the creative and sustaining power that emanates from the Supreme Being and brings all realms into existence, maintaining them from within. God, therefore, is not only the silent, formless Absolute but also the dynamic, vibrating current of consciousness that permeates creation. Contact with this inner current of Light and Sound is seen as the primary means by which the soul comes to know and ultimately merge in the Supreme.
At the same time, Sant Mat holds that God is both immanent and transcendent: present as the indwelling divine essence in every being, yet existing beyond all physical and subtle planes. The soul’s apparent separation from God is attributed not to any real division in essence, but to coverings of mind, ego, karma, and illusion that obscure this inner presence. Through disciplined meditation on the inner Light and Sound, these veils are gradually removed, allowing direct experiential realization rather than merely conceptual belief. In this way, knowledge of God is framed less as a doctrine to be accepted and more as a state of consciousness to be awakened.
Devotional language and imagery are not excluded in this view; God may be approached as a personal Lord out of love and reverence, even though the ultimate reality remains formless and beyond attributes. The path emphasizes that genuine realization of this Supreme Being is characterized by profound love, for God is described as pure love itself and the final aim of the soul is reunion with that love. While various names and symbols are used, Sant Mat consistently stresses that this Reality transcends all sectarian boundaries and religious labels, standing as the same ultimate truth toward which all authentic spiritual traditions point.
