What is the ultimate goal of Sant Mat?
The teaching under consideration presents the ultimate spiritual aim as the complete reunion of the individual soul with the Supreme Being, often described as Sat Purush or the Absolute. This reunion is not merely symbolic; it signifies the soul’s return to its original divine home in the highest spiritual realm, known as Sach Khand or the True Realm. In that state, the soul abides in permanent union with the Divine Source, enjoying enduring peace, bliss, and wisdom. The journey culminates in direct realization and merger with Absolute Reality, where the soul’s true nature as pure consciousness is fully revealed.
A central aspect of this goal is liberation from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, frequently termed samsara. Such liberation is understood as complete freedom from the limitations of mind, matter, and all lower spiritual planes. The soul, having transcended physical, astral, and causal regions, no longer remains bound by material attachments or karmic compulsions. This freedom is described as immortality in the sense of an unbroken, conscious existence in the divine realm, beyond the reach of temporal change.
The path toward this consummation is characterized as a return journey along the inner current of divine Sound, often called Shabd or Naam. Through the disciplined practice of Surat Shabd Yoga—meditation on the inner Light and Sound—the attention of the soul is gradually withdrawn from the outer senses and reoriented toward its spiritual source. As the soul ascends through subtler regions by means of this inner current, it comes into closer and closer attunement with the Supreme Being. The culmination of this process is a stable, unshakeable union in Sach Khand, where the distinction between lover and Beloved, seeker and sought, is finally dissolved.
