Within Baul philosophy, love (prema) is regarded as the supreme spiritual principle, both the path and the goal of inner realization. The Divine is approached not as an abstract entity but as an intimate “Person of the Heart,” encountered through intense, heartfelt devotion. Rather than privileging ritual, scripture, or intellectual study, Baul teachings place the quality and depth of love at the center of spiritual life. Love is understood as the very nature of ultimate reality, the living medium through which the seeker comes to know the Divine presence within.

A distinctive feature of this vision is the unity of human and divine love. The love between human beings—especially in a deeply committed, intimate relationship—can serve as a direct vehicle for experiencing the sacred. Physical and emotional love are not rejected but refined, becoming a sacred discipline through which ego, pride, and the sense of separation are gradually dissolved. In this sense, the lover’s willingness to “lose” the small self in devotion to the beloved is treated as a metaphor for spiritual liberation.

Baul thought also emphasizes that authentic love must be natural, spontaneous, and unconfined by rigid social or sectarian boundaries. Caste distinctions, institutional authority, and narrow religious identities are seen as obstacles when they obstruct the free flow of the heart. Love that is genuine and unforced transcends such divisions, recognizing all beings as expressions of the same divine essence. This inclusive, boundary-crossing love is considered superior to any external conformity to rules or dogma.

Finally, Baul spirituality treats love as something to be embodied and enacted rather than merely contemplated. Song, dance, and simple communal living are cherished as ways of cultivating and expressing devotion to the inner Beloved. Longing, the pain of apparent separation, and the yearning for union are not avoided but embraced as spiritually fruitful states that ripen the heart for deeper realization. In this way, love becomes a living, dynamic practice through which everyday human experience is gradually suffused with the presence of the Divine.
