What is the ultimate goal of Nichiren Buddhism?
The teaching in question presents the ultimate aim as the attainment of Buddhahood in this very lifetime, within one’s present form and circumstances. This is not deferred to a distant future or another realm, but is to be realized amid the realities of daily life. Buddhahood here signifies the full awakening of the inherent Buddha nature that all beings possess, a state characterized by perfect wisdom, compassion, and courage. Liberation is understood as freedom from fundamental ignorance and suffering, so that an unshakable happiness can be manifested even in the midst of adversity.
The path to this goal is faith in and practice based on the Lotus Sutra, expressed most concretely through the chanting of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. This chanting is regarded as devotion to the Mystic Law embodied in the Lotus Sutra and as the direct means to reveal one’s innate enlightenment. Through such practice, practitioners strive to transform suffering into happiness, to change negative karma and life conditions, and to bring forth their highest potential. In this way, the realization of Buddhahood is not merely an inner experience but also a dynamic process of benefiting both oneself and others.
From this perspective, individual awakening and the transformation of society are inseparable. As more individuals awaken to their Buddha nature through faith in the Lotus Sutra and the chanting of its title, a peaceful and harmonious society—often described as the Buddha Land or the realization of kosen-rufu—can be established on earth. The ultimate goal, therefore, is both deeply personal and profoundly communal: the attainment of enlightenment in this lifetime and the creation of a world in which the dignity and enlightenment of all people are brought to light.
