Can one exist without the other?
Within the traditional understanding of Yin and Yang, neither can truly exist in isolation from the other. They are not independent substances, but complementary aspects of a single reality that only gain meaning through mutual contrast. Darkness is understood in relation to light, rest in relation to activity, cold in relation to heat. If one pole were absolutely absent, the other would lose its very basis for definition and recognition.
This relationship is often described as interdependence and mutual arising: the presence of one necessarily implies the presence of the other as its counterpart. Yin and Yang work together to create wholeness, not as enemies in conflict, but as partners in a dynamic balance. Classical images of the symbol show a dot of Yin within Yang and a dot of Yang within Yin, suggesting that each contains the seed of the other and can transform into it. Night turns into day, stillness gives way to movement, and each phase prepares the ground for its opposite.
From this perspective, reality is seen as a continuous interplay of opposites rather than a collection of isolated forces. The harmony of the world depends on this ceaseless interaction and balance, where no aspect stands entirely alone. The absence of either pole would signify not a purified state of the remaining one, but a kind of incompleteness, a breakdown of the pattern through which phenomena arise and are understood.
