Is there a specific way to hug Amma?

There is indeed a simple and reverential protocol commonly observed when approaching Amma for her embrace, though it is not elaborate in a ritualistic sense. Devotees typically wait in an organized line, remove their shoes, and then approach her on their knees or in a bowed posture, guided by attendants or volunteers. This physical attitude of humility and respect is considered part of the inner preparation, allowing the mind to become quiet and receptive. The emphasis is less on strict external form and more on approaching with modesty, decorum, and an open heart.

When the moment of the embrace comes, one usually kneels directly before her and leans forward so that she can draw the devotee into her arms. The devotee does not force or control the hug, but allows Amma to initiate and guide it, remaining relaxed and still. The head is generally placed against her upper body on one side, near the shoulder and heart region, and the arms rest gently without gripping or clinging. During this time, many remain silent, with eyes closed or lowered, inwardly praying, repeating a mantra, or simply opening themselves to the blessing being offered.

Within the embrace, Amma may whisper mantras, blessings, or affectionate words, and sometimes gently pat the back. The atmosphere is meant to support an interior turning, so devotees are encouraged to be calm, attentive, and unhurried, letting her determine the duration of the contact. When she begins to release the embrace, the devotee withdraws gently, without abruptness or haste. Often some form of prasad, such as a blessed item, may be given at this point, received with gratitude and without lingering in the physical space.

After receiving the blessing, devotees move away promptly along the designated path so that others may come forward, maintaining the same sense of reverence and orderliness. Practical considerations—such as modest dress, minimal jewelry, and avoiding strong scents—are observed to ensure that the physical contact is comfortable and respectful for all involved. Throughout the entire process, the essential instruction is to follow the guidance of the attendants and to maintain an inner posture of humility, devotion, and receptivity, allowing the embrace to function as a sacred meeting rather than a casual gesture.
