How does Laya Yoga connect to the concept of chakras?
Within the perspective of Laya Yoga, the chakras function as the principal inner stations where mind, prāṇa (vital energy), and subtle sound are gradually absorbed and refined. “Laya” itself means dissolution or absorption, and this term captures the way awareness is withdrawn from the senses and gross mental activity and then allowed to dissolve into subtler levels of being located at these energy centers. The chakras thus serve as a structured pathway, beginning with the lower centers and moving upward, each one marking a stage where coarser patterns of mind and energy are surrendered into more subtle states. Rather than being treated merely as symbolic diagrams, they operate as an experiential map of the subtle body, guiding the inner journey from conditioned consciousness toward more transparent awareness.
Inner sound (nāda) and vibration are central to this process. Traditional descriptions associate each chakra with specific subtle sounds and seed syllables (bīja mantras), and Laya Yoga employs focused listening and mantra recitation as means to still the mind at these loci. Concentration on the nāda at a given chakra allows mental activity there to be absorbed into the sound itself, fostering a deep state of inner quiet. In this way, sound is both a sign of the unfolding process and a tool that facilitates the dissolution of mental modifications, supporting the merging of individual consciousness with a more universal dimension.
The ascent of prāṇa and kuṇḍalinī through the central channel (suṣumṇā nāḍī) further clarifies the connection between Laya Yoga and the chakras. As this energy is guided upward, it passes through and activates each chakra, refining the movements of prāṇa and quieting the corresponding mental tendencies. Each center represents a particular mode of śakti and a specific level of consciousness, and practices such as visualization and mantra at these points are used to dissolve identification with those layers. Ultimately, the higher centers, especially ājñā and the thousand-petaled lotus at the crown, are regarded as gateways through which individual mind is absorbed into pure awareness, so that the chakras become not final destinations but stages in a progressive unveiling of consciousness.
