What is the full name of Dogen?

Within the Zen tradition, names often reveal layers of meaning about a teacher’s life and realization, and this is true of the figure known as Dōgen. His full name is given as Dōgen Kigen (道元希玄), a designation that reflects his identity as a seminal Buddhist monk and thinker. In the course of his religious life, he also bore the dharma name Eihei Dōgen, a title associated with the monastery he established, Eiheiji. These names together gesture toward the intertwining of person, practice, and place that characterizes his legacy.

The distinction between Dōgen Kigen and Eihei Dōgen can be seen as more than a mere matter of historical record; it reflects different facets of the same awakened life. “Dōgen Kigen” points to the individual monk and teacher, while “Eihei Dōgen” evokes the living community of practice that formed around him. To attend carefully to these names is to sense how, in the Zen understanding, identity is not fixed but expressed through vows, lineage, and the concrete circumstances of practice.
