What role did Sri Yukteswar play in spreading Kriya Yoga to the West?
Sri Yukteswar Giri’s contribution to the appearance of Kriya Yoga in the Western world was foundational, yet largely indirect. Rather than traveling abroad himself, he shaped the one who would become the principal emissary of this tradition, Paramahansa Yogananda. Over many years he trained Yogananda rigorously in Kriya Yoga techniques, in the underlying philosophy, and in the practical art of spiritual instruction. This training was not limited to technique alone, but extended to character formation and a deep understanding of the guru–disciple relationship and monastic life. In this way, he forged in his disciple both the inner realization and the outer discipline needed to carry an authentic lineage into a very different cultural setting.
A central aspect of Sri Yukteswar’s role was his explicit commissioning of Yogananda to carry Kriya Yoga to Western seekers. According to Yogananda’s own account, this was presented not as a casual suggestion but as a divine mission, sanctioned and blessed by the guru. Sri Yukteswar authorized Yogananda’s departure for America and continued to offer guidance afterward, including through correspondence and later personal contact when Yogananda returned to India. Thus, the transmission of Kriya Yoga to the West unfolded under his spiritual oversight, even though his physical presence remained in India.
Sri Yukteswar also contributed by giving the teachings a form and structure that could be communicated beyond their original cultural milieu. Through his disciplined ashram life and systematic instruction, he helped organize the teachings in a way that highlighted their rational and “scientific” dimensions, making them more accessible to minds trained in analytical thinking. His ashrams functioned as training grounds and spiritual headquarters, providing an institutional and spiritual base from which Yogananda could go forth. In this sense, Sri Yukteswar may be seen as the architect behind the scenes: the one who prepared, authorized, and inwardly supported the mission that would eventually make Kriya Yoga known to countless seekers in the West.
