Spiritual Figures  Sri Yukteswar Giri FAQs  FAQ

What is the lineage of Sri Yukteswar’s gurus?

Within the Kriya Yoga tradition, Sri Yukteswar Giri stands in a clearly defined guru-lineage that is both simple in form and profound in implication. His direct guru was Lahiri Mahasaya, also known as Shyama Charan Lahiri, a householder saint who became renowned as a transmitter of Kriya Yoga. Lahiri Mahasaya, in turn, was the disciple of Mahavatar Babaji, often revered in the tradition as a great master who restored this ancient yogic science. Thus, the spiritual current that flowed to Sri Yukteswar is understood to move from Mahavatar Babaji to Lahiri Mahasaya, and from Lahiri Mahasaya to Sri Yukteswar Giri.

Seen in this light, Sri Yukteswar’s place in the lineage is not merely biographical but symbolic of a living stream of realization passed from guru to disciple. The sequence Mahavatar Babaji → Lahiri Mahasaya → Sri Yukteswar Giri represents a transmission that is held to be both intimate and universal: intimate, because it is conveyed through direct discipleship; universal, because it is regarded as a reawakening of timeless spiritual knowledge. This same lineage was then carried forward by Sri Yukteswar’s own disciple, Paramahansa Yogananda, who received Kriya Yoga from him and helped to spread this tradition more widely. In contemplating this chain of teachers, one encounters not just a list of names, but a vision of spiritual heritage in which guidance, grace, and disciplined practice are handed down from one realized soul to another.
