Is Spanda the same as Kundalini energy?
Spanda and Kundalinī belong to the same sacred landscape, yet they do not denote the same reality. Spanda is spoken of as the subtle “throb” or “vibration” of consciousness itself, the dynamic aspect of Śiva by which the universe appears, is sustained, and dissolves. It is not a localized or merely physiological force, but the universal, all‑pervading dynamism of absolute awareness. In this sense, Spanda is cosmic and omnipresent, the very rhythm of reality in motion. It is the creative power of consciousness that underlies and permeates all manifestation.
Kundalinī, by contrast, is described as a specific, individualized form of that same divine power residing within a particular being. Traditionally it is portrayed as dormant spiritual energy coiled at the base of the spine, forming part of the subtle spiritual anatomy. When awakened and set into ascent through the inner centers, it becomes a transformative process that can lead to expanded or heightened states of consciousness. Kundalinī is thus the microcosmic aspect of the divine creative power, experienced within the limits and possibilities of an individual practitioner.
The relationship between the two can be understood as one of universal principle and particular expression. Spanda is the boundless, creative pulsation of consciousness everywhere, while Kundalinī is that very power focused and operative within the human system. When Kundalinī stirs, moves, and rises, what is being encountered is the same Spanda‑Śakti that manifests the cosmos, now revealing itself in the intimate field of personal experience. In this way, Kundalinī’s awakening may be seen as a doorway through which the individual is re‑aligned with the universal Spanda that is the source and essence of all.
