How does Non-Dual Shaivism view the concept of creation?
Within Non-Dual Shaivism, what is commonly called “creation” is understood as the self-manifestation of consciousness itself, identified as Śiva. There is no production of a world outside or apart from this ultimate reality; rather, the universe is the appearance of Śiva-Śakti in manifold forms. Consciousness is both the efficient and material cause of all that appears, so nothing arises from a separate substance or from sheer nothingness. The world, in this view, is not dismissed as a mere illusion, but regarded as a real, though dependent, expression of divine energy. Its reality is inseparable from consciousness, much as waves are inseparable from the ocean or reflections from the mirror that holds them.
This manifestation is described as the free, spontaneous self-expression of Śiva’s own nature, grounded in absolute freedom (svātantrya). Through Śakti, the power of consciousness, there is a dynamic vibration or pulsation (spanda) by which all levels of reality unfold. These appearances (ābhāsas) are light-forms within consciousness, not fabrications external to it. The tradition speaks of this as a playful, aesthetic display (līlā), arising from fullness rather than from lack or necessity. Creation, preservation, and dissolution are thus ongoing movements within consciousness, not one-time events.
Non-Dual Shaivism also emphasizes that what appears as multiplicity is made possible by the creative power often named māyā. Here māyā is not sheer deception but the capacity of consciousness to manifest diversity while never ceasing to be non-dual. Through this power, consciousness can seem to contract into finite subjects and objects, giving rise to the rich tapestry of experience. Yet throughout this process, Śiva-Śakti remains the single, undivided reality in which all distinctions arise and subside.
From this standpoint, creation can be seen as consciousness knowing and expressing itself through an infinite variety of forms. The cosmos is one continuous act of self-revelation, in which every moment of manifestation, maintenance, concealment, and grace is a facet of the same living awareness. To recognize this is to see that what appears as an external universe is, at its core, nothing other than the radiance of one’s own deepest consciousness, which has never truly departed from its original unity.
