What are the main teachings of Soka Gakkai?
Soka Gakkai presents a lay-centered form of Nichiren Buddhism that revolves around the Lotus Sutra and the chanting of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. This phrase is regarded as embodying the essence of the Lotus Sutra and is upheld as the fundamental practice for revealing the state of Buddhahood inherent in life. Chanting is directed toward the Gohonzon, a mandala that represents the life-state of Buddhahood and serves as the focal point of devotion. Through this practice, enlightenment is understood not as a distant ideal but as something to be realized within this very lifetime. The movement thus treats Buddhism less as abstract doctrine and more as a living law that can be activated in the midst of ordinary circumstances.
At the heart of its worldview is the conviction that all people possess Buddha nature and that every individual has the potential to attain Buddhahood. This is expressed through the concept of “human revolution,” the inner transformation of character that manifests as greater wisdom, courage, and compassion. Such inner change is seen as inseparable from outer change, reflecting the principle of the oneness of life and environment: as life is transformed, circumstances and relationships are also transformed. Each person is regarded as having unique value and a distinct mission, often illustrated by the image of different blossoms—cherry, plum, peach, and damson—each beautiful in its own way. This perspective grounds a profound respect for the dignity and potential of every human being.
Practice in Soka Gakkai is structured around the three pillars of faith, practice, and study. Faith signifies trust in Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the Lotus Sutra, and one’s own Buddha nature. Practice consists primarily of daily chanting—both Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and recitation of portions of the Lotus Sutra—as well as efforts to share the teaching with others so they too may seek happiness. Study involves engaging with Nichiren’s writings and Soka Gakkai’s interpretations to deepen understanding and conviction. These three elements are regarded as mutually reinforcing, forming a practical path by which inner transformation is steadily cultivated.
Soka Gakkai also frames its mission in terms of kosen-rufu, the widespread propagation of Nichiren Buddhism as a means to contribute to peace and the happiness of all people. This aim is pursued not through withdrawal from society but through active engagement with daily life, relationships, and social issues. Buddhism is presented as a practical philosophy that should yield concrete benefits—greater happiness, resilience, and value creation in the midst of life’s challenges. In this way, personal awakening and social betterment are treated as two sides of the same coin, with individual human revolution seen as the engine for broader change in families, communities, and the world.
