How does Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga view the relationship between the individual and the universe?
In Integral Yoga, the individual and the universe are understood as two expressions of a single Divine Reality, often named Sachchidananda or Brahman. The apparent separation between the personal self and the cosmos is seen as a product of ignorance, while in essence there is a profound unity of being and consciousness. The individual is not an isolated fragment but a concentrated center of universal consciousness, a unique formulation of the Divine meant to manifest particular aspects of that one Reality. Thus the human being is viewed as a microcosm of the macrocosm, containing within themselves the same principles and planes of existence that structure the universe.
This vision is inseparable from a dynamic understanding of evolution. Evolution is not confined to biological change; it is a spiritual unfolding in which Spirit progressively manifests through matter, life, and mind toward higher, supramental consciousness. Individual spiritual practice is therefore not a private escape from the world but a conscious collaboration with this cosmic movement. As the individual opens to and embodies higher levels of consciousness, that realization contributes to the universe’s own self-discovery and the manifestation of its inherent divinity. At the same time, universal forces and planes of consciousness support and shape the individual’s inner journey, creating a relationship of mutual participation.
Integral Yoga aims at an integral realization that embraces the transcendent, the universal, and the individual. It seeks unity with the Divine beyond the world, recognition of oneness with all beings and forces, and a thorough transformation of personal nature in life and action. The individual becomes a conscious instrument of the Divine intention to manifest perfect consciousness in material existence, working to bring down higher, especially supramental, consciousness into earthly life. In this way, individual liberation and cosmic transformation are seen as two inseparable aspects of a single, ongoing evolutionary process.
