What is the goal of Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga?
The central aim is not an escape from the world, but the transformation of human nature so that divine consciousness can fully manifest in earthly life. Rather than seeking liberation away from existence, this path aspires to the divinisation of life itself, the establishment of a truly divine life on Earth. At its heart lies the realization of the Integral Divine—existence, consciousness, and bliss—so that this reality is not only experienced inwardly but also expressed outwardly in thought, feeling, action, and even the physical being.
This goal is described as a supramental or truth-conscious transformation, in which the Supermind, a divine consciousness beyond the ordinary mind, becomes the governing principle of human life. All parts of the being—physical, vital, mental, and spiritual—are to be integrated and uplifted, so that no aspect is left outside the scope of spiritual realization. Liberation is thus joined to transformation: personal union with the Divine is accompanied by the gradual remoulding of character, nature, and even bodily existence according to a higher truth.
Such an undertaking has a collective dimension as well as an individual one. The aspiration is for a spiritualized humanity and a society shaped by truth-consciousness, in which the Divine is progressively manifested in the structures and rhythms of common life. This involves the descent of a higher consciousness that can guide an evolutionary movement from mind to Supermind, from an ego-centered existence to a gnostic, divinized mode of being. The ultimate aim is an integral perfection in which spirit and matter are consciously united, and earthly existence itself becomes a field for the unfolding of a divine life.
