What is the goal of Vietnamese Thiền practice?
Vietnamese Thiền orients all of its disciplines toward the direct realization of one’s inherent Buddha-nature and the awakening that flows from that realization. Rather than treating Buddhahood as a distant ideal, this tradition emphasizes enlightenment as an immediate possibility, grounded in the present moment and in the very mind that is ordinarily obscured by ignorance and attachment. Awakening is described as a clear seeing of the true mind, beyond conceptual elaboration, emotional turbulence, and the illusion of a separate self. In this sense, enlightenment is not the acquisition of something new, but the unveiling of what has always been there.
This realization is intimately tied to the ending of suffering at its root. By seeing through dualistic thinking and the mistaken identification with a fixed, independent self, the practitioner becomes free from the bondage of samsara, with its cycles of birth, death, and rebirth. Liberation here is not merely an abstract metaphysical state; it is the lived freedom from the compulsions of craving, aversion, and delusion. The insight into the empty, interdependent nature of all phenomena dissolves the rigid boundaries that sustain suffering, allowing a non-dual awareness to manifest.
At the same time, Vietnamese Thiền stresses that such awakening must be embodied in the fabric of everyday life. Meditation, mindfulness, and present-moment awareness are cultivated not as escapes from the world, but as ways of transforming ordinary activities into expressions of wisdom and compassion. Family life, work, and social engagement become fields of practice where inner clarity and outer conduct are harmonized. In this way, enlightenment is expressed through compassionate action and ethical responsiveness to all beings.
The ultimate aim, therefore, is a complete awakening to Buddha-nature that brings freedom from suffering while nurturing an active commitment to the well-being of others. Inner peace and mental clarity are not ends in themselves, but foundations for a life that benefits all sentient beings. Vietnamese Thiền holds that such realization is accessible within the very conditions of ordinary existence, inviting practitioners to discover the awakened mind in the midst of daily responsibilities rather than apart from them.
