What is the role of authority in Tibetan Logic?
Within the Tibetan pramāṇa tradition, authority is given a place of respect, yet its role is carefully delimited by the standards of valid cognition. The central commitment is to direct perception and inference as the primary means of knowing; scriptural statements and the words of teachers are not treated as independent or unquestionable sources of truth. Authority is acknowledged, but it must harmonize with what can be established through clear seeing and sound reasoning. In this way, reverence for the Buddha and the scriptures is held together with a rigorous demand for rational scrutiny.
Scripture, especially the Buddha’s words, is regarded as reliable testimony precisely because it does not contradict valid perception and inference and because it exhibits internal coherence and transformative power. Yet this reliability is conditional: when a scriptural passage appears to conflict with reason or experience, it is subject to interpretation, and its status as a definitive statement can be reconsidered. Authority, therefore, functions less as an ultimate court of appeal and more as a trusted guide whose pronouncements must still withstand examination. Blind reliance on authority is discouraged, not out of disrespect, but out of a commitment to genuine understanding.
In the setting of monastic debate, this perspective becomes a lived discipline. Scriptural citations may be brought forward as supports, but they do not override a properly constructed inference or a clearly established fact. Debaters are trained to test scriptural claims through logical analysis, to distinguish definitive from interpretable teachings, and to avoid resting an argument solely on appeal to authority. A teacher, too, is honored as an epistemic guide whose role is to lead students toward valid cognition through explanation, reasoning, and contemplative verification, rather than to demand unexamined assent. In this way, authority is woven into a culture of inquiry where faith and critical intelligence are meant to mature together.
