What is the role of epistemology in Tibetan Logic?
Within Tibetan pramāṇa, epistemology functions as the basic architecture of the entire enterprise of reasoning and debate. It is concerned with valid cognition, distinguishing sharply between awareness that is accurate and non-deceptive and awareness that is mistaken or doubtful. At its core, it identifies two principal means of valid knowledge: direct perception, understood as immediate, non-conceptual awareness, and inference, understood as logical reasoning grounded in reliable evidence. By clarifying these modes of knowing, epistemology also investigates the sources of knowledge and the nature of the objects known, as well as the ways in which subsequent cognition depends upon these primary valid cognitions.
This framework does not remain abstract; it becomes the very grammar of Tibetan monastic debate. Epistemology sets out the criteria for correct reasoning, the standards for acceptable evidence and proof, and the formal structure of theses, reasons, and examples. On this basis, it also delineates logical fallacies and contradictions, allowing practitioners to expose errors and refine their understanding through rigorous exchange. Debate training thus becomes a disciplined exercise in applying the principles of valid cognition, testing views against shared standards rather than personal opinion.
At a deeper level, this epistemological training is harnessed for philosophical and spiritual inquiry. The same tools used to distinguish valid from invalid cognition are turned toward central Buddhist themes such as emptiness, dependent origination, the nature of consciousness, and the relation between conventional and ultimate truth. By steadily eliminating misconceptions and sharpening analytical clarity, epistemology supports a form of contemplative discernment that aims at reliable understanding rather than mere speculation. In this way, pramāṇa serves not only as a theory of knowledge but as a method for transforming the mind, ensuring that insight into reality rests on sound, carefully examined cognition.
