What is Mooji's background and how did he become a spiritual teacher?

Mooji, also known as Anthony Paul Moo-Young, is a spiritual teacher of Advaita Vedanta. He was born in Port Antonio, Jamaica in 1954 and grew up in a Christian household. However, he had a deep longing for spiritual understanding from a young age and was drawn to the teachings of Hinduism and Buddhism.

In his early twenties, Mooji moved to London, England and began exploring different spiritual paths, including Christianity, Buddhism, and Taoism. He also experimented with drugs and alcohol, searching for a deeper understanding of life. However, these experiences only left him feeling more lost and disconnected.

It wasn't until he met his spiritual teacher, Papaji, that Mooji's life took a profound turn. Papaji, a disciple of the renowned sage Ramana Maharshi, introduced Mooji to the teachings of Advaita Vedanta, a non-dualistic philosophy that emphasizes the oneness of all beings and the ultimate reality of pure consciousness.

Under Papaji's guidance, Mooji experienced a deep spiritual awakening and recognized the true nature of his being. He realized that the mind and ego were mere illusions and that his true self was pure consciousness, beyond all concepts and beliefs.

After Papaji's passing, Mooji continued to share the teachings of Advaita Vedanta with others, following in the footsteps of his teacher. He started holding satsangs, which are gatherings where he shares his wisdom and invites others to inquire into the nature of their being.

Mooji's teachings are simple yet profound, and he emphasizes the importance of self-inquiry and letting go of all concepts and beliefs to discover one's true nature. He encourages his students to let go of the mind and ego and to rest in the pure awareness that is always present.

Over the years, Mooji has gained a large following and has become a respected spiritual teacher worldwide. He has written several books, including "Vaster Than Sky, Greater Than Space" and "Before I Am," and has held satsangs and retreats in various countries.

Despite his growing popularity, Mooji remains humble and grounded, emphasizing that he is not the teacher, but merely a pointer to the truth within each individual. He continues to share the teachings of Advaita Vedanta with love, compassion, and humor, inspiring many to awaken to their true nature and live a life of peace and joy.
