What should I do with my thoughts during Zazen?

During Zazen, the goal is not to suppress or control your thoughts, but rather to observe them without judgment or attachment. It is natural for thoughts to arise during meditation, as our minds are constantly active. However, the key is to not get caught up in these thoughts and instead, let them pass by like clouds in the sky.

One helpful technique is to focus on your breath or a specific point of your body, such as your abdomen or the tip of your nose. This can help anchor your attention and bring you back to the present moment when your mind starts to wander.

If you find yourself getting lost in a thought, gently acknowledge it and then let it go. Don't try to push it away or force it out of your mind. Instead, return to your focus on the breath or body sensation.

Another approach is to label your thoughts as "thinking" and then let them go. This can help create a space between you and your thoughts, allowing you to observe them without getting entangled in them.

Remember, the purpose of Zazen is not to have a completely still mind, but rather to develop a sense of awareness and non-attachment to our thoughts. With regular practice, you may find that your thoughts become less distracting and your mind becomes more calm and clear.

Lastly, be patient and compassionate with yourself. It takes time and effort to cultivate a peaceful mind, and there will be days when your thoughts seem more active than others. But with consistent practice and a gentle approach, you can learn to coexist with your thoughts during Zazen and ultimately, in your daily life.
